Corey Hart - Sunglasses At Night (Friction Re-edit/re-work)

Some songs stay fresh even after years. Corey Harts 1983 hit "Sunglasses at Night" is such one. Although it's implementing synths and drum machine it never gets taggy like other eighties hits in retrospect (...at least not in the verse - the bridge and the chorus are a bit taggy, Mr. Hart). It must be the simplicity of the track that does it.
This K.I.S.S. approach (Keep It Simple, Stupid) is also key in making a good re-edit, and german producer/DJ Friction knows his KISSes!
His re-edit starts out with a solo Oberheim DMX kick-part that I don't remember from the original. Then filtered synth and a little 808 percussion and we're off!
The bridge gets a delay-treatment of the "s" in "she's deceiving me", and DJ Friction saves us the embarresement of the original bridge and takes us back to the verse instead. Fabulous!
To top things off, he adds a synth that pushes things a bit forward. (OK, I've got some rules here: "No new melody or elements must be added" - read up on the rules in the "About This Blog" - but this really fits the track).

From the soundtrack 1984 (For The Love Of Big Brother) comes this forgotten gem; IMO some of Eurythmics best work - and still fresh sounding!
The original in itself is semi-instrumental, and by adding a little percussion, delay and a couple of bpms italian DJ/producer Belabouce takes this balearic beauty into its late twenties.
I do hope to see this on released properly very soon!

Family of the year - Psyche or like scope (Kimo Edits Collection)

Most edits are over older or classic disco and electronic tracks. DJ Kimo from Barcelona, Spain, flips it and takes on L.A.-based indie folk-rock band Famliy Of The Year. The track "Psyche Or Like Scope" is off their first full-length album "Songbook" (2009)

The original track stands out from the rest of FOTYs songbook, and it itself is sort of alt-disco. DJ Kimo adds a subtle four-on-the-floor and a touch of effects like delay and airy reverb. The vocals are kept at just one repeating phrase and some "aaaaaahh"s. Great edit!

I really wish that Tim Zawada had been around in 1979 to make a decent extended version or dub version for the 12" (IMO the original 12" is a bit boring)
This edit is really well-crafted with a dynamic arrangement, and while emphasizing the good parts it stays interesting.

Most edits are disco or soul tracks, but this here's hard rock. This was G'n'R's second single in 1987 and now some 20 years later Todd terje has his take on a version that fit the DJ set.
He added a little percussion at the beginning and looped a few guitar riffs and !BANG! now the club kids can rock, too.
This is an unofficial release, and the sound quality isn't the best. But as always, when it comes to Tangoterje the craftsmanship is perfect.

Here's an older release to show you guys that Todd Terje isn't just about disco.
"New Morning" is originally off the "Feel it"-album by german band Kitty Winter Gypsy Nova. Released in 1978 and followed by their second album "Limelight Suite". Both in the jazz-funk/ jazz-dance genre.

The track New Morning was revived in the early '90 when the acid-jazz wave swept Europe, and again in the 00's by this edit by Todd Terje.
His method for this one was to clean the thing up and tighten it for a modern dancefloor. Rearranged and cleaned up, but free of delays and other effects.

This GAMM release is a classic and essential mostly because of this track and the phenomenal A side edit of "I Can't Help It" by Michael Jackson. Also featured is Michael Henderson's Disco-jazz groover "Let Love Enter"

Bros. Johnson - Ain't We Funkin' Now (Todd Terje Edit)

First time I heard The Brothers Johnson's "Ain't We Funkin' Now" was on the ultimate break beat series and as I remember the track was edited by Luis Flores (the man at UBB who extended the drumbreaks on some of the volumes).
UBB used the version with the drumbreak:discogs.com and I found a bootleg 12" featuring that same version at a flea market in NYC. (..crates full of 12" and classic breakbeats. Some had written "Magic" on the label. Now, if it had belong to Mr. Magic that explains the condition was under "good" and often "fair". I bought them all, though. It was $1/each and several had dublets in the cover.)

Anyway, I'm wondering why Todd Terje didn't use the drumbeat version in his edit of "Ain't We Funkin' Now"!? He's used the "regular" extended version that goes straight to "..listen to the bass man" halfway. Well, the edit, which is unofficial, is a DJ-edit well arranged with no effects added. Not his best to date.

Before A-ha, Röyksopp, Lindstrom and Todd Terje Norway wasn't exactly known for its music exports. Except maybe for the prog-funk-rock band Titanic. Formed in 1969, they released their debut in 1971 and the 1973-follow-up "Macumba" featured this gem.

This is a regular DJ-edit; i.e. it's looped and rearranged without effects. A classic piece of work!

It fits your rock-set, slips easily into your funk-set and roughens things up in your disco-set.
If You haven't yet, go buy it! The A-side is Todd Terje's edit of the no-wave groover "Woman of the World" by Double.

Todd Terje's edit is actually an extended instrumental of this hit. He doesn't utilize reverbs, delays or filters the way he usually does. The intro crowd that originally fades in is gained and looped, clearly repeating voices and cheers. Great idea!

Re-editing a hit like this isn't easy, and IMO this edit is like a foreplay without climax. Maybe because these lyrics are classic, fun and essential for the feel of the song. It's easier to do a re-edit of this one, because the arrangement isn't that well-known and thus people are more open to changes. "But don't worry, you can suntan!"

Todd Terje Week - Tuesday

Obviously, information on The Supreme Label is spares, as they are putting out "pirate pressings of un-licensed re-edits." (wording taken from Discogs.com).
But that's bad meaning good!
Since 2004 this label has brought us some of the best re-edits around. And this one is no exception.

The original, "Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes" is off Paul Simon's classic "Graceland" album, and features african choir and Paul singing about his fling with an african diamond miner's daughter.

Now, Todd Terje's re-edit is...well, Terje-ish. Looped percussion, delays and reverb on dubbed vocals plus a bit of filtering. Sweeeet!

B-side of this supreme release contains edits of "Give me Your Love" - Curtis Mayfield and "Black Magic" - Astrud Gilberto

Btw. I guess, Todd's source is the Graceland (Remastered) CD, that came out in 2004. This release has the original song with it's chorus intro and percussion AND the unreleased acustic version with bass intro and clear Paul Simon vocals (thank god for Rhino Records!)

By public demand, here is a Todd Terje special. Hey, let's call it Terje-week, and I'll try and keep online all week.

Todd Terje Week - Monday

This one was an instant classic both as original by Chic, and also as this edit was released sometime last year in 2009.
Originally, it was the follow-up to "Le Freak", but it didn't get the same commercial success. However, it is way more sophisticated in its composition and thus, stands the test of time.

Todd TangoTerje's edit emphasizes the hypnotic guitar riff from start and throws in some dubbed vocal samples before the Bernard Edwards trademark bass kicks in. The edit holds this tempo until a 40 second guitar delay rounds things up.

This particular release is a promo. Unofficial 12" is out on Supreme.

For now just a white label, but must be a matter of time before Decca, Virgin or whoever own the rights make this an official release.
Tood Terje, for it is him once again, has really stretched this one to its limits. Just a touch of extra drums. The rest is send through effects, loops and filters and with a steady pace it clocks in at 5:36 (the original from the "Aftermath" album is 3:20, which was long for 1966)

Now, I'm was never a big fan of Mr. and Mrs. LePage clean euro-disco. But I was very much into the covers, which matched the airbrush style of my teenage room. Here I'm not talking about the covers with the official faces of Lime, Joy Dorris and Chris Marsh, but the likes of the one featured here off Lime 3 (1983).
That album includes "On The Grid" which is a full fledged apreggiator-driven electronic disco anthem.
Copicat re-edited it on his 2003 release "#02" and made the arrangement a little more varied.

That 12" also features an instrumental speed-down edit of Grace Jones "Pull Up To The Bumper" and my personal favorite Afro Cuban Band's "Something's Got To Give".

Jefferson Starship - Miracles (Sunshine Jones Re-edit)

The first time I heard this melody, was on De La Souls "I am I Be" off their 1993 "Buhloone Mindstate" and it's been haunting me since. Actually, back then I already had the original "Miracles " by Jefferson Starship off their Red Octopus album, but it was not until this re-edit came out I went back and listened to the original from beginning to end.
A beautiful original, but this re-edit does legitimate the re-edit genre. Here, the original is updated with respect.
Loop, dubs, delays and filtering - the works. The vocals are kept to a minimum just popping up a few times as forgotten memories of an echoing distant. Added snare and kick put it in a frame. Love it!

Three degrees - Mercy (Greg Wilson Edit)

Greg Wilson has added a volume two to the series "Credit To The Edit". And all 12 edit are done in Greg's usual style: respectfully and very professionally. The acts are as diverse as Roxy Music, A Guy Called Gerald and O.M.D.

Another artist that get's the "Wilson-treatment" is The Third Degree and their Duffy Cover "Mercy". A straight up edit that just prolongues the good parts. Btw: The Third Degree project is masterminded by founder of Acid Jazz, Eddie Piller, Frederik Ekander, Swedish label guy with acess to the legendary Cosmos studio, and Marshall Chess, son of Chess label founder. Their mission is to further "real" live recorded music as opposed to digitally recorded music made across the web.

About time this guy got mentioned here. This is just one of the maybe hundreds of re-edits from Todd Terje. Nothing much to say. Made to perfection. Not much of Sylvesters vocals left, but that's how Mr. Terje rolls. Todd's edit starts where the original version takes off at 3:50 and ends with the beginning of the original. Confused? A-B check with the original off the 1981 album "Magic Window"

Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band - Do Your Thing (Lulu Rouge Edit)

This one's beautiful. Danish producer team Lulu Rouge vs. Charles Wright in a dancefloor frenzy. These guys know their dancefloor suspense-and-release routine. The track is Wright's 1968 hit "Do Your Thing". The Lulu guys left out the guitar solo, which is perfectly fine, and added pecussion and a complementary bass-synth (yeah, yeah.. I know it's breaking the rules of this blog..). I loved "Do Your Thing" before, now...wauww!

Hott City - Feelin' Love ( Lunar Jam Re-edit), 1979

Now, I'm Mista-know-it-all. At least that's what I thought...

Fall 2008, I heard a mix including Lunar Jam's "Our Feel Love" and I dug it right away. What a great house track with a true disco feel and sound! But through a Youtube browsing I found out that it was "just" a re-edit of Hott City's "Feelin' Love" (1979). The original on the Butterfly label still sounds fresh after 30 years and with the help from the guys at Lunar Jam it is now a newborn classic - if it wasn't already. Lunar Jam kept the pulsating percussive parts and the smooth'n'sexy chorus. And - this is the best part - they slowed it down by some 15 bpm (down til 120 bpm). A tempo which suits the track better, IMO. Others would just have sped it up and added 4-on-the-floor.

Now I've been schooled - again...

What's the matter with this guy. Pilooski. Does he ever sleep?
Besides DJ'ing he has made tons of re-edits of rare forgotten classics in the last 3 years. On top of that he must be crate diggin' like mad to find these rarities.
Anyway, on the new Dirty Edits Vol. 2 you'll find an updated version of Elvis' true 1958 gem "Crawfish" (from the King Creole movie).
French Pilooski's way of re-editing is sheer elegance; he loops the right parts, adds only a supportive kick or hi-hat and top it with an occasional delay. The original never gets lost in contemporary dance drums and what have we...

Btw. If you're a cover freak, check also "Dirty Edits vol. 1." The albums frontcovers has a short cartoon story to tell.
I'm not sure if I wanna see a "Dirty Edits Vol. 3", if uknowwhatimsayin'!

Well, maybe not the first, but one of the first available to the public (..or Tom's friends at least). Al Downing: "I'll Be Holding On" (1974) was edited by the magnificient Tom Moulton (picture) and cut on acetate 10". However, it wasn't release until 2006 on the Soul Jazz comp "A Tom Moulton Mix"
A typical cut'n'paste mix - by far his best - but nevertheless a good example of the possibilities of the time.

This is a 101 on re-editing, if there ever was one. Diplo has utilized this 1968 classic to the fullest without takin' the groove and soul out of it. He's snatched strings from one channel and mixed it up, added delays, EQ and looped the short breaks. Admitted: the "wh-wh-wh-what is it!" sample works, though it's against my rules!
IMO, this is how it should be done! Off the "Verve // Remixed 4" album.
