In an overcompressed reality, the german label Fried Tofu stand their ground and delivers soulful disco-edits true to the originals.
Their second release includes edits of Fat Back Band, Pam Todd & Love Exchange and some other Greg Carmichael-ish disco stomper.
The edits are great in a K.I.S.S.-kinda way and stay within the strict rules of this here blog! A must-have for those sexy-late-night-DJ-sets.

Some songs stay fresh even after years. Corey Harts 1983 hit "Sunglasses at Night" is such one. Although it's implementing synths and drum machine it never gets taggy like other eighties hits in retrospect (...at least not in the verse - the bridge and the chorus are a bit taggy, Mr. Hart). It must be the simplicity of the track that does it. This K.I.S.S. approach (Keep It Simple, Stupid) is also key in making a good re-edit, and german producer/DJ Friction knows his KISSes! His re-edit starts out with a solo Oberheim DMX kick-part that I don't remember from the original. Then filtered synth and a little 808 percussion and we're off! The bridge gets a delay-treatment of the "s" in "she's deceiving me", and DJ Friction saves us the embarresement of the original bridge and takes us back to the verse instead. Fabulous!
To top things off, he adds a synth that pushes things a bit forward. (OK, I've got some rules here: "No new melody or elements must be added" - read up on the rules in the "About This Blog" - but this really fits the track).
A+ Edit!
From the soundtrack 1984 (For The Love Of Big Brother) comes this forgotten gem; IMO some of Eurythmics best work - and still fresh sounding!
The original in itself is semi-instrumental, and by adding a little percussion, delay and a couple of bpms italian DJ/producer Belabouce takes this balearic beauty into its late twenties.
I do hope to see this on released properly very soon!
Most edits are over older or classic disco and electronic tracks. DJ Kimo from Barcelona, Spain, flips it and takes on L.A.-based indie folk-rock band Famliy Of The Year. The track "Psyche Or Like Scope" is off their first full-length album "Songbook" (2009)
The original track stands out from the rest of FOTYs songbook, and it itself is sort of alt-disco. DJ Kimo adds a subtle four-on-the-floor and a touch of effects like delay and airy reverb. The vocals are kept at just one repeating phrase and some "aaaaaahh"s. Great edit!

I really wish that Tim Zawada had been around in 1979 to make a decent extended version or dub version for the 12" (IMO the original 12" is a bit boring)
This edit is really well-crafted with a dynamic arrangement, and while emphasizing the good parts it stays interesting.

Like Eddie Murphy, I got some rules when I throw down:
Re-edits can only contain elements from the original recording.
No new melody or elements must be added, e.g. extra instruments or vocals. That would make it a remix.
Then again: a little kick and a snare to mark things up never hurt nobody.
It's OK to fade, reverse, cut, loop and add delay/reverb/phase fx etc. to the mix.
It's OK to included any version available of the recording: extended, dub, a capella, instrumental, perc-apella, live etc. as long as it is the same artist.
The re-edit must work better than the original. Else it's pointless, Tess!

Re-edits history
Re-edits (or later extended versions) are altered versions of an existing song with repeated and reordered arrangement.
The re-edit was born because pre-disco DJs like Francis Grasso and Walter Gibbons and music aficionado Tom Moulton saw the advantages of longer versions; dancing people are responding to specific instrumental parts of the song (often a drumbreak or breakdown) and they want to stay in the groove for longer than just the usual 3:20 the single could provide.
At first they mixed two identical records on the spot, but later they would use reel-to-reel and cassettes. Eventually, when the record companies saw the sales potential, the DJs took it from the booth to the studio. Since, the art of re-editing has been refined by people like Danny Krivit, Tom Moulton, Walter Gibbons, Yam Who?, Todd Terje Dimitri from Paris and Pilooski.
